On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on his neck for over eight minutes. The incident, caught on video, sparked outrage and sparked a global conversation about police brutality and racial inequality.
Protests and unrest erupted in Minneapolis and across the country, as the Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum and called for justice for Floyd and other victims of police violence. The trial against Chauvin and the other officers involved in Floyd's death began in March 2021, and Chauvin was eventually found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. All the officers involved also face federal civil rights charges. The Black Lives Matter movement has had a significant impact globally, with protests taking place in countries all over the world.
